This architect's own home.
The original, a charming two bedroom, one bathroom affair from the 1940's, had escaped a bad '70s remodel. With two athletic kids and two dogs, more space was needed but only if the backyard could be maintained. The resulting addition sits atop one half of the existing first floor, creating three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A super insulated roof slopes to the west, bending from the second to first floor. Every wall, roof and floor are insulated creating a dead quite home. The home is gas free, running on electricity only. Designed for solar, the roof support a large array. A first floor chef's kitchen opens to a den and out the the fruit tree filled backyard: one seamless space. Views capture the glorious Southern California life with downtown LA to the northeast and Palos Verdes plus Catalina Island to the south. All of this without overwhelming the neighbors. The home fits in while still comfortable in its own skin.
The house's exterior is clad in hand-troweled-smooth cement plaster at the first floor, and thin ceder wood planks in a rainscreen for the second floor. The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), as yet unrealized, is clad in open joint resin panels: black for the north and south elevations, white for the east and west.
