Designed 2010, unrealized
On a panoramic hilltop in Newhall, this unbuilt project looked to the hill towns of Italy for inspiration.
Strong roof forms, differing building heights and simple detailing help create the connection to the rustic Italian communities. Due to city requirements, maintaining the existing footprint became the starting point for the project. The loose arrangement of the forms echoes the rise and fall of the surrounding landscape. Careful arrangement of the spectacular views and an eye towards allowing an extended family to live closely but in harmony drove the layout. With natural ventilation, a secure water supply and a large PV array on an existing outbuilding, this complex was meant to be self sufficient.
